Short
Watercolor animation of female steps of Rio de Janeiro funk. The artist came into contact with the universe of homemade YouTube tutorials that teach variations of the square dance, and which have become part of pandemic activities, in search of new expressions and body skills – as well as the exhausting work of making a handmade animation. In times of isolation, working online became an adaptation of the artist's process, who until then created animations from her own footage. "Olhe-se" is the name of a song by Karol Conka, one of the funk singers who brought feminism to the table. By looking at herself, the woman can feel her power in art, dance and painting, and share what she knows with other women, connected to each other by the ancestral drum of funk. Composed of 101 watercolors on A4 Canson c'a Grain 180g paper.

Ilana Paterman Brazil

Ilana Paterman Brasil is an artist, graduated from the Kunsthochschule für Medien, Cologne, Germany, and a designer from the Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial (ESDI/UERJ). The universe of traditional Brazilian cultures is her field of work: dances and gestures of cultural manifestations are recorded and transformed into watercolor animations. Ilana is currently working on a PhD in Design at ESDI/UERJ on her creative process. The focus of her academic and artistic research is the investigation of terreiro practices and their epistemologies that transgress colonial logic, and the potential of the female body in contact with these practices.
