In the wake of the resolution of the partition of Africa at the Berlin Convention in 1885, the Portuguese army recorded the effective occupation of the territory conquered in 1907 from the people of Cuamato, in southern Angola. A History of Africa revives this rarely seen photographic archive through the tragic tale of the Calipalula, the Cuamato nobles who were central to the tangle of events in the Portuguese pacification campaign.
