Ja’Tovia M. Gary’s work seeks to liberate the distorted histories through which Black life is often viewed, while highlighting a nuanced and multivalent Black interiority. Through documentary and experimental video art, Gary traces the ways in which structures and perceptions about representations of race, gender, sexuality, and violence are shaped. Her films have been screened at festivals and cinemas around the world.
