New York attracts Jane and Carlos, like so many others, with the promise of a better life. That is why they left their home country, Brazil. However, as immigrants, they do not have all the opportunities that the American dream entails. Their search for a new life represents that of all immigrants who dare to try a new beginning in another country. It is also the story of the changes that are taking place in the United States and Brazil. The fictional story of Jane and Carlos in this experimental film is intertwined with the personal experiences of the film crew, who recount in interspersed episodes their own immigration and those of others they have researched.

In search of a better life, Jane from Minas Gerais and Carlos from Brasilia move to New York. But as undocumented immigrants, they do not find the much-coveted "American Dream". Based on interviews with undocumented immigrants, Calidris tells the story of Brazilians in the United States, taking into account the political relations between the two countries at the time.
