A counter-spell, QUEBRANTE travels through the ruins of the Trans-Amazonian Highway BR-230 and its phantasmagoria, portraying its stones and its ghosts. Set in the small town of Rurópolis (PA) - the first to be built on the Highway to serve as a base for the workers who built it - QUEBRANTE follows Dona Erismar, known in the region as "The Woman of the Caves". A retired elementary school teacher, Dona Erismar was responsible for the discovery of the caves in the region: she entered the dark and unknown holes until their ends, only with a candle in her hands and a lighter tied to her pants - in case the flame went out. A great piece of nationalist propaganda for Brazil's developmental progress project, the Trans-Amazonian Highway was implemented during the civil-military dictatorship that took place until then - and is still a warm scar in the wreckage of the country's History. A conversation between the rocks and the moon, BREAKING is freely inspired by Robert Smithson's project THE TRULY UNDERGROUND CINEMA (1971) and Maya Deren's film THE VERY EYE OF THE NIGHT (1958).

Janaina Wagner

1989, São Paulo - BRAZIL
JANAINA WAGNER works with film, drawing and installations. Her work aims to present a critical understanding of the ways in which humans impose systems of order and control on their surroundings. By appropriating history presented through various media, Wagner considers how notions of progress and legacy are articulated through a constellation of stories, facts, images and memories.

Her work is part of important collections, such as KADIST (FR), Instituto Inhotim (BR), Galeria Municipal do Porto (PT) and CMB - Coleção Moraes Barbosa (BR).

A graduate in Fine Arts and Journalism and a high school video teacher, Janaina develops her visual work through a process of “decoupage”, rearticulating images, stories and texts already inserted in the media circulation.

Currently a PhD student at Le Fresnoy-Studio National des Arts Contemporains (FR) entitled “LE PRESENT EN EFFONDREMENT – DES FANTÔMES ERRANTS: FAIRE MODE WITH WOLVES-GAROUS, ÉLÉPHANTS DE FER, CURUPIRAS, IRACEMAS, BETAIL FRANKENSTEIN, MONDAYS AND WHALES”, Janaina Wagner is also developing her first feature-length film, the experimental documentary A BOLSA DA NOITE.

Janaina lives and works between Roubaix and São Paulo.
