Darks Miranda
A multidisciplinary artist whose work spans experimental cinema and sculpture. Taking as his primary reference Carmen Miranda, her symbolic universe of exoticism and the intersections of pop culture, Darks proposes inversions and tensions that blur this crystallized imaginary, thus becoming its double and its opposite.
He currently lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, where he seeks to strengthen the phantasmagorical relationships that exist between landscape, utopia, rubble and fantasy. In his video works, Darks uses archival images, entangled in an editing process that plays with superposition and excess, creating compositions and visual universes between fiction and performed reality. The notions of progress and future, which can take on the face of nightmare, are dismantled in a laboratory of hybrids, becoming science fiction of the past. In her sculptural work, the archaeological nature is expanded, as is the sensation of inhabiting a parallel dimension: scenic landscapes are populated by beings forged in synthetic materials such as latex, resin, plastics, pigments and spray paint.
She has participated in exhibitions at venues such as Galeria Ibeu, A Gentil Carioca, Galeria Jaqueline Martins, Galeria Athena, Projeto Vênus, CAMA, SESC Pinheiros (SP), Teatro Municipal (SP), Paço Imperial (RJ), MAR - Museu de Arte do Rio, MAM-RJ (Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro), Centro Municipal de Artes Hélio Oiticica (RJ), Museu Oscar Niemeyer (PR), Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (Portugal), Filmhuis Cavia (Netherlands) and Tate Modern (United Kingdom). In 2019, she held her first solo exhibition, “mulher gosta”, at Galeria Cândido Portinari (UERJ). In 2020, he produced commissioned works for the Instituto Moreira Salles and for The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. In 2022, he participated in the FAAP (SP) Artistic Residency and held his second solo exhibition, “A dangerous night on the island of Vulcano”, at Carpintaria, Rio de Janeiro.
