The great voyages to the “New World” were seen as expanding the boundaries of the visible and displacing those of the invisible, so the maps of that time translate the real and the imaginary. The film follows the journey of the Brazilian military in search of an imaginary island with the same name as their country. The myth of 1483 Brazil, or Hy-Brasil, is known to exist west of Ireland and above the Fortunate Isles. Vision of Paradise examines the capacity of human imagination and computer simulations to construct spaces. Amidst the thin threshold of the real, simulated and imagined, the film examines contemporary ideas of virtual reality and its ambition to expand the boundaries of the physical world into a “New World”.

Leonardo Pirondi
Leonardo Pirondi is a filmmaker from São Paulo, Brazil, based in Los Angeles, Porto and São Paulo. His films explore the infinite chasm between multiple derivative versions of reality through documentary, experimental and narrative modes. Much of his work uses analog and digital manipulations on celluloid to examine the sociopolitical ramifications of the intersections between imagination, science, myth and technology. His films have been screened and discussed at international film festivals, institutions and venues, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, BFI London, True/False, Edinburgh, Ambulante, Wexner Center for the Arts, Chicago International, REDCAT, Athens International Film/Video, Vienna Shorts, Centro Cultural São Paulo, CalArts, University of Chicago and University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Some of his works are part of the collections of the Cinemateca do Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and The Film-Makers' Cooperative in New York. He holds a BA in Film/Video from the California Institute of the Arts and is the recipient of the Tim Disney Award for Excellence in Storytelling Arts.
