A DANGEROUS NIGHT ON VULCANO ISLAND

A DANGEROUS NIGHT ON VULCANO ISLAND

Darks Miranda

Brazil

2023

Film

Medium-length

Archive film composed entirely of images from science fiction films made between 1950 and 1989, thus encompassing a certain spatial and warlike imagery typical of the Cold War. “A Dangerous Night on Vulcan Island” uses some interstices from the films: fragments of landscape shots devoid of any human figure. It is a film woven from the residue of real scenes, from pieces of archive reorganized and reinvented in an effort to build a world based on the power of fiction and editing. In the new film, the breaking of the narrative structure of the appropriated films and the reimagining of their images gives life to new and mysterious invented landscapes.

Darks Miranda

A multidisciplinary artist whose work ranges from experimental cinema to sculpture, Darks Miranda is a slapstick entity of darkness who balances fruit on his head, haunted by his ancestors. He emerges from the mute rubble of modernity, without a swing, and slides through the layers of mud accumulated in the concrete over time.

He has participated in exhibitions at venues such as Galeria Ibeu, A Gentil Carioca, Galeria Jaqueline Martins, Galeria Athena, Projeto Vênus, CAMA, SESC Pinheiros (SP), Teatro Municipal (SP), Paço Imperial (RJ), MAR - Museu de Arte do Rio, MAM-RJ (Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro), Museu Oscar Niemeyer (PR), Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães (Portugal), Filmhuis Cavia (Holland) and Tate Modern (United Kingdom). In 2019, he held his first solo exhibition, “mulher gosta”, at Galeria Cândido Portinari (UERJ). In 2020, he produced commissioned works for the Instituto Moreira Salles and for The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. In 2022, he participated in the FAAP (SP) Artistic Residency and held his second solo exhibition, “A dangerous night on the island of Vulcano”, at Carpintaria, Rio de Janeiro.
