Short Film

A street corner is combined and mixed with a bird song recorded on that same street. A symbiotic relationship is triggered: the rapid cuts between the images of the street produce new textures and shapes in our brain, while the sound emphasizes different frequencies of the bird song. The energetic power resulting from the combination of these elements creates a new image that is almost tactile, malleable and undulating.

Alexandre Alagôa

Alexandre Alagôa (1994) is an experimental filmmaker and multimedia artist who works between Lisbon and Luxembourg.

Heavily influenced by Conceptual Art, Fluxus and Structural Film, Alagôa's work investigates the raw material and mechanics of the audiovisual medium, exploring its mechanical, plastic and durational qualities to enhance an immediate physical and shamanic experience in the observer, challenging their perceptive organism and nervous system, often emphasizing a conscious perception of the act of seeing and hearing.

He holds a degree in Multimedia Arts (2015), a Master's in Audiovisuals (2018) and a Postgraduate degree in Sound Art (2019) from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. From 2017 to 2018 he was a Technician and Assistant at the Department of Multimedia Art of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon, supporting Audiovisual students in the development and presentation of film, video and installations.

He is a visiting professor at Portuguese cultural and educational institutions such as Atelier de Lisboa (Alvalade, Lisbon) and CineReactor (S. Sebastião, Lisbon), giving lectures on experimental cinema, mainly focused on the approach of structural film. He has also worked as a video and sound technician for Portuguese cultural associations such as Associação Gandaia (Costa da Caparica, Portugal) and Gerador (Lisbon, Portugal).

In 2020, he launched a new project called turva, an audiovisual publishing house focused on the production and editing of experimental art, together with the Portuguese musician and sound artist Luís Neto.

Alagôa’s films and audiovisual pieces have been featured in international festivals and exhibitions, such as Go Short (Netherlands, 2022), Videoformes (France, 2022), Monstra (Portugal, 2022), Vienna Shorts (Austria, 2021), Festival Tous Courts (France, 2021), Cairo Video Fest (Egypt, 2021), Flatpack (United Kingdom, 2021), Split Video Art Festival (Croatia, 2021), Strangloscope (Brazil, 2021), Art Madrid (Spain, 2020), InShadow: Lisboa Festival Screendance (Lisbon, 2018); Festival Ecrã (Brazil, 2018); Festival Video Art Miden (Greece, 2018); Richterfest (Russia, 2017); IVAHM (Spain, 2017); Reverso Festival 02 (Lisbon, 2016); I got up and... never sat down again (Plataforma Revólver, Lisbon, 2016).
