X-VOTIVE is a visual album set to the atmospheric, neo-soul sound of Acqua Mossa. This quest narrative follows a heroic Black Time Traveler through a dreamlike world as she searches for six sacred relics that will open a portal to new and possible futures. Prepared to undertake this arduous journey, our protagonist is plunged into a hyper-real pilgrimage that illuminates lineage, ancestry, and divine power. Joining a lineage of experimental films such as Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon and Sun Ra’s Space is the Place, X-VOTIVE is a new media work that pays homage to the cinematic tradition of visual poetry.

Trish Denton

Trish Denton hails from the space between Detroit and Flint, Michigan—you know, the state surrounded by the great lakes? She co-hosted the Spielpalast Cabaret from 2008 to 2011 and toured with the company to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Fringe inspired Trish to write and direct her first full-length show, the quietly surreal Orkestriska’s Box. A collaboration with Thought Faucet and The Porter Music Box Museum, this multimedia production premiered in November 2012. It was Orkestriska’s Box that sparked the idea for In Tandem Arts. The following year, Trish collaborated with the Vermont Birth Network to stage BIRTH, a documentary theater piece based on several hundred interviews about birth in America. The production featured a mixed cast of doctors, nurses, artists, and newcomers to the birthing world. With the success of BIRTH, Trish founded In Tandem Arts in 2013 and went on to train with master director Ping Chong. Trish has been involved with Telling My Story, a project using theater and testimony in correctional and rehabilitation facilities, and was a member of the production team at JAG Productions, an award-winning Black theater company. As the director and production designer of Brundibar: A Musical Tale (2016), Retro Spec (2020), and X-Votive (2021), Trish has been called “an auteur” for her relatable blend of pop culture with surrealism and folk traditions. Trish currently serves as a creative coach for Parallel Narratives, which uses storytelling and folk imagination for self-discovery, and is the Executive Director of In Tandem Arts.
