In 1981, directors Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet filmed Trop tôt/Trop tard, an essay film that puts class struggle and revolution into dialogue through landscape, narration and history itself. Forty years later, my camera portrays Sarajevo and the human landscape that still holds the pain of the war that began in 1991. History is alive and latent in every daily movement, in every transit, in every gaze. I think of Danièle Huillet and write to her wanting to talk about the power of cinema to deal with this pain, or at least whether cinema is still important today.
