Feature Film
"Behind the Scenes" is a series of 12 portraits set to music, with subjects applying their makeup throughout Berlin. In his first feature-length film, Juniper Foam also produced a soundtrack whose subtle, yet constant transitions echo the transformations in his subject's faces as well as their surroundings. The narrative space is held open to many interpretations by the intimacy of the portraits as well as their being broadcast into more vibrant scenarios. Referencing YouTube glamor tutorials, the ambient visuals of internet radio, as well as Warhol's screen tests, the film's formal juxtapositions also capture deeply personal questions of belonging and being seen.

Juniper Foam

Juniper Foam is the alias of artist-curator Gary Schultz. Born in Michigan in 1982, Schultz holds an MFA from CalArts and is a lecturer at the University of Art in Berlin. In 2013, he founded the conceptual record label, Care Of Editions. Alongside its curatorial program, Schultz developed new approaches to distribution that helped illustrate and perform the uniqueness of limited digital editions.
His Juniper Foam project stages a conversation between music and cinema. Balancing the power of image and sound has produced a fluidity that distinguishes his films and videos. They draw as much on the sensational possibilities of remix culture and the internet as they do the contemplative and lasting qualities of cinematic realism.
