“Waiting for Godot” is a play I return to from time to time. I enjoy finding reworkings and reworkings. Partly because the story within it is so versatile, and partly because Samuel Beckett’s estate is so aggressive in cutting off versions of the play that don’t conform to Beckett’s original instructions.
During the global pandemic, I’ve started using the play as a way to think about how we support and how we are supported. It becomes an easy allegory for isolation and waiting for a solution that, while promised, may never come. The simulation has only one choice and one action: wait or stop waiting.
