To this day, a work in progress called ‘Curtains’ can be found on Michael Pilz’s extensive website. The idea was to edit all the shots he made in a strict chronological order – as a representation of his work and philosophy of film. With Love – Volume 1 is developed from this project. How close it is to the original intentions behind the curtains, only Pilz can say. But considering that Pilz’s entire life and art is about self-development, discovery and realization, each film he makes is in its own way another sum total. Each film is a debut and also a cenotaph of what has been so far; this development requires encounters with other people; that is the only way to grow. Come and meet Pilz – and you. Selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival 2020.

Michael Pilz

Born in 1943 in Gmünd, Lower Austria, Pilz began taking photographs and working with 8mm film in 1954. He moved to Vienna in 1956, where he developed a growing interest in the technical, material and mental aspects of filmmaking, as well as in the various forms of expressing the subconscious in film, as shown in his experimental films of the 1960s. During the 1970s, Pilz worked for the ORF. Since 1983, Pilz has devoted himself to giving occasional lectures and workshops on aesthetics and experimental film. During the last two decades, Pilz has concentrated mainly on producing films shot on his extensive travels.
